These guidelines are intended as first steps to be taken to minimize harm to a patient, and to prevent further harm. If a patient in the U.S. is at significant risk of harm or risk of the loss of life, dial 9-1-1 and/or transport the patient to the nearest medical care facility if conditions warrant it.*

If there's a significant chance that a health condition will worsen over time, seek advanced care from a qualified medical professional.

*There are some conditions (potential injury to the spinal cord, for example) that could be worsened by moving the patient. If you suspect such conditions, and the patient is not at significant risk of harm from the environment (if the patient is in a safe location, isn't exposed to cold weather, etc.), wait for a qualified professional to assess the patient and/or transport the person.
